LOS ANGELES - A soli 59 anni è morto l'attore statunitense Reg E. Cathey, il Freddy Hayes della celebre serie "House of Cards", dove interpretava il gestore di Freddy's BBQ Joint, locale di Washington D.C. tra i preferiti di Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey). Per quel ruoto aveva vinto un Emmy nel 2015.
Cathey aveva recitato anche nella serie tv "The Wire" e nella miniserie "The Corner". È stato proprio David Simon, con cui aveva collaborato in entrambi i lavori, ad annunciarne la morte tramite un tweet: «Non era solo un bravissimo e talentuoso attore ma uno degli esseri umani più meravigliosi con cui io abbia mai condiviso delle lunghe giornate sul set».

Reginald Eugene Cathey era nato il 18 agosto del 1958 a Huntsville, in Alabama, e aveva cominciato a recitare, a teatro, fin da bambino. Il suo primo importante ruolo è del 1984 in un film per la tv intitolato "A Doctor’s Story". Negli anni Ottanta ha recitato in "Nato il quattro luglio", "Quick Change" e "The Mask".
In un'intervista al Guardian, l'attore aveva attribuito all'elezione di Barack Obama alla Casa Bianca il suo successo in tv. «La gente - aveva detto - si è cominciata ad abituare all'idea che un nero può essere istruito e capace di parlare bene».
Tributi sono arrivati in suo onore dopo l'annuncio della morte. Tra questi, Beau Williamson, il creatore di "House of Cards", che ne ha lodato la generosità e il senso dell'umorismo. E poi Samuel Jackson, Wendell Pierce e Chris Rock.
