I produttori europei incontrano il cinema del mondo

Anno 1. - cuba

Il focus dedicato quest’anno al cinema cubano dal Festival del film di Locarno  rappresenta la prima «puntata» di un progetto triennale che  dedicheremo,  in collaborazione con DSC – Direzione dello sviluppo e della cooperazione- alla promozione di quelle industrie cinematografiche che per le ragioni più diverse stanno attraversando un momento di crisi  e meritano di essere valorizzate e riscoperte.

Il progetto si  chiama Porte Aperte, dunque, perché apriamo  la porta alle voci, le idee, le nuove iniziative di questi paesi.  In America Latina Cuba, anche se è uno dei paesi più piccoli,  ha tuttavia una lunga e ricca tradizione cinematografica, con nomi importanti e film che hanno avuto un successo internazionale, da un classico come Lucia di Humberto Solas a un film recente di grande popolarità come Fragole e cioccolato. Ma negli ultimi anni la crisi economica e l’isolamento fisico e politico del paese hanno drasticamente ridotto la produzione cubana da quindici/venti film all’anno a solo quattro/cinque, accanto ai quali continua però a svilupparsi, attraverso le scuole, una fiorente  ricerca nel campo dei corti, dei documentari e dei video sperimentali.

Per aiutare questo patrimonio di creatività e di talenti, Porte Aperte ha invitato i registi, i produttori e i rappresentanti delle istituzioni cinematografiche cubane – le scuole, i festival- a incontrare a Locarno i produttori europei interessati a possibili future collaborazioni con Cuba. L’incontro si svolgerà in forma di «workshop» domenica 10 agosto.

Un impegno in favore degli scambi culturali nord-sud

In quanto ufficio della Confederazione competente per l’aiuto umanitario e la cooperazione allo sviluppo, la Direzione dello sviluppo e della cooperazione (DSC) desidera suscitare in Svizzera una migliore comprensione e una maggiore solidarietà verso gli abitanti dei paesi del Sud e dell’Est. Le manifestazioni che recano in cartellone le espressioni culturali dei paesi in via di sviluppo partecipano a questo sforzo. Esse contribuiscono a modificare la collocazione dell’opinione pubblica nei confronti dell’altro e ad aiutare gli artisti del Sud. Ecco perché il Festival internazionale del film di Locarno e la DSC si apprestano di nuovo anche quest’anno a rafforzare la presentazione delle cinematografie del mondo, e ciò tramite due progetti nell’ambito di questa 56^a edizione del festival.

“Porte aperte – I produttori europei incontrano il cinema del mondo” è un progetto triennale che si prefigge di valorizzare le cinematografie del Sud e dell’Est che attraversano un periodo di crisi. Esso prende avvio con il cinema cubano che soffre per le conseguenze dell’embargo. I festivalieri avranno così modo di riscoprire le principali opere create di recente dal cinema di Cuba, mentre una decina di cineasti cubani si sposteranno fino a Locarno per presentare ai produttori i loro progetti futuri e raccogliere i mezzi finanziari per rilanciare la produzione audiovisiva nazionale.

Queste porte aperte su Cuba rappresentano anche l’occasione per far conoscere il notevole lavoro svolto dalla Scuola internazionale di cinema e TV (EICTV) che, formando giovani talenti, esercita una considerevole influenza su tutta la produzione cinematografica latinoamericana. Indipendente dal governo cubano, la scuola di San Antonio de los Baños non potrebbe continuare ad operare senza il finanziamento assicurato dai donatori. Sensibile a questo sforzo di diversità culturale la DSC sostiene dal 2002 le attività dell’EICTV.

Sempre in America latina, la cinematografia argentina sta conoscendo un incontestabile rinnovamento, a proposito del quale si può asserire che la crisi economica non è stata che un catalizzatore. Con “Los Argentinos juniores” il Festival di Locarno mette in vetrina la vitalità e la creatività della cinematografia  dei giovani realizzatori argentini. Patrocinando questa sezione, la DSC consente la realizzazione di workshop che permetteranno ai cineasti argentini di promuovere i loro prossimi film.

Scambi e incontri nord-sud qualificano il rinnovato partenariato tra la DSC e il Festival di Locarno. C’è da rallegrarsi sin d’ora all’idea che da queste sinergie scaturiranno nuove e belle opere della cinematografia mondiale!

Camilo Vivés Palles

Director of the ICAIC and president of the Productora Internacional ICAIC, he is considered “the” major Cuban producer, winning an array of international and national awards. He is the President of the board of directors of the Federación Ibero-americana de Productores de Cine y Audiovisuales FIPCA.

Salon de Arte Digital – La Havana June/ July 2003

The 5 year old Digital Arts Salon presents the work of130 Cubans artists and 200 artists from 30 countries. And Locarno also joins this adventure by screening in its “In Progress” section the works of four of the most talented Cuban artists.

Juan Carlos Cremata Malberti

Actor, scriptwriter and director, his talent has been recognized internationally. In addition to many television series for children, which were highly successful domestically, he has made 4 films. All of them have won many domestic and international awards.

Daniel Diaz Torres

Writer, critic, director, he is also the head  of the School's Directing Department of the International School of Film and Television in San Antonio de los Baños and a  member of the Foundation of the New Latin American Cinema.  His films have been selected for many international film festivals, including Berlin, San Sebastian, Toronto, Sundance.

Humberto Padrón

Born in Havana in 1967, he is one of the most talented of the young Cuban directors. He made several short feature films and two documentaries for which he won many National awards. Video de Familia is Humberto’s first feature film, made with only 400 USD and 5 highly talented actors, and proof of the young director’s filmmaking abilities.

Fernando Pérez Valdes

Born in Havana, he is one of the most important and internationally well known Cuban film directors. Interested in all the different fields of culture, writer, journalist, critic, director, Russian speaking and expert in economics, has a surprising filmography in both features and documentaries, for which he received many prizes.

Humberto Solás

He is an important representative of the Latin American cinema. Interested in experimentation, and from the platform of his No-Budget Film Festival,  he calls for the democratization and freedom of cinema. His  films  have  participated  in  the  official selections of the Cannes,  Venice,  Havana,  Sundance Festivals,  among many others. 

Arturo Sotto

Born in December 1967 in Havana, where he specialized in filmmaking,  he wrote and directed two very successful and multi-awarded feature films: Pon  tu pensamiento en mí and his latest Amor Vertical. For both films he was nominated for the Goya award as best foreign film and chosen to represent Cuba at the Academy Awards.

Juan Carlos Zaldívar

Cuban-born he completed both his BFA and MFA in film and video studies at New York University, where he now teaches. His work has been presented around the world including at MOMA in New York City, The Palais de Tokyo, the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. He is also an award-winning sound designer.

Escuela Internacional de Cine y TV de San Antonio de Los Banos

It is the academic project of The Foundation for New Latin American Cinema, which aims to train professionals for the audiovisual industries of Ibero-america, the Caribbean, Asia and Africa. The school recruits as teachers active professionals from all over the world. Since its foundation, the EICTV has trained some 4’000 professionals from more than 40 countries.

Istituto Superior de Arte

The Faculty of Audio-visual Communication of the Istituto Superior de Arte, based in Havana, has 15 years’ experience in training specialists for cinema, radio and television. Students can choose between several professional pathways in order to have a comprehensive knowledge of the subject and the necessary skills to enter the job market.

Festival Internacional de cine pobre de Gibara

The Gibara International No-Budget Film Festival is a two years old event specialising in the promotion of audiovisual works that have been made on minimal resources. Humberto Solàs is the festival president, and Sergio Benvenuto is the artistic director.

Havana film festival

A 25 years old festival, it has made a great contribution to develop Cuban cultural values. Each year it shows more than 400 titles and complements its programme with concerts, plays, exhibitions. It is one of the most important event for the Latin American film community and for all film-lovers in Cuba.

ARGENTINOS JUNIORS

C'è un nuovo cinema in  Argentina, alle spalle dei grandi nomi di Solanas, dei Sorin, dei Subiela, e il mondo del cinema se ne sta accorgendo. Voci originali, una tecnica solida, una realtà complessa, spesso drammatica, sempre ricca, da esplorare con i film, e una nuova generazione che sta reinventando il suo modo di fare cinema. Per questo il Festival di Locarno ha deciso di dedicare quest’anno una particolare attenzione, all’interno della sua sezione Cineasti del presente, alla “nuova ola” argentina, allo sguardo fresco e diverso che i giovani cineasti argentini rivolgono al loro paese.

In collaborazione con DSC, la direzione del festival vuole riconoscere questa creatività, attraverso un “filo rosso” che abbiamo chiamato Argentinos Juniors e che da una parte percorre la selezione di Cineasti del presente in cui sono ospitati film argentini; dall’ altra attraverso la presenza di un gruppo di giovanissimi autori che, accompagnati dai loro “work in progress”, dai “demo” dei film in lavorazione, dalle loro sceneggiature, illustreranno al pubblico e agli addetti ai lavori la nuova generazione argentina.

HUMAN RIGHTS PROGRAMM

In quest’epoca tormentata da guerre, soprusi, razzismo e intolleranza il Festival Internazionale del Film di Locarno crede che è importante dare risalto al cinema coraggioso e spesso non riconosciuto che dà un volto e una voce alle vittime della violenza, al cinema che affronta il difficile tema della violazione dei diritti umani. Ecco perché grazie al sostegno del Ministero degli Affari Esteri svizzero – dipartimento per la difesa dei Diritti dell’Uomo – il Festival internazionale del film Locarno ha selezionato quasi 100 film provenienti da 46 paesi diversi  Il programma è diviso in cinque sezioni. Human Rights Tracks è un filo rosso che lega tutti i film che affrontano il problema dei diritti umani selezionati in Cineasti del Presente e Pardi di domani. Tali film saranno segnalati sugli orari e sulle pubblicazioni del Festival con il logo del Human Rights Programm. Gli Human Rights Screenings sono un programma di proiezioni serali –da venerdì 8 a venerdì 15 agosto, dalle 20 all’1.30 – che offre una selezione di più di quaranta film sui diritti umani. Lo Human Rights Panel si terrà al Forum nella mattinata del 12 agosto, e offrirà al pubblico del Festival l’occasione di incontrare numerose personalità che operano per la difesa dei Diritti dell’Uomo. I film della sezione Human Right Tracks saranno tutti replicati nella giornata di sabato 16 agosto – Human Rights Day. In più, una videoteca che conta più di cinquanta titoli (la Videoteca Human Rights) farà da sfondo al Programma e sarà gratuitamente a disposizione del pubblico durante tutto il Festival.
